Background

In February 2005, The Women’s College of the University of Denver received their charter approval for the Sigma Psi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. The Sigma Psi chapter inducted its first group of members to the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society in June of 2005. The Women’s College is an all female, nontraditional college of 300 students, offering four different degree programs. Sigma Psi is the only chapter on the University of Denver campus.
The initial group of inductees consisted of 20 members. The first Board of Officers includes the President: Dawn Watson, Vice President: Barbara Flynn, Secretary: Marie Younkerman, Treasurer: Carolyn Munoz, and executive committee representative(s) Jazmine Vega, and Leslie Kissel, and faculty advisor, Carol Zak-Dance, Ph.D.
The first service project the Honor Society opted to undertake was to offer assistance to the family of a TWC student who was experiencing serious health issues. Various members of the chapter obtained tickets for the family of seven to attend the Disney on Ice production of “Finding Nemo.” They also contributed money for parking and refreshments for the evening.
The inaugural group inducted the new class of 16 members to the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society in June of 2006. An inaugural member, Paige Farkas, donated funds to have a cloth banner made that will be displayed at all Lambda Pi Eta events, including commencements.
Beginning in January of 2007, the Sigma Psi chapter of Lambda Pi Eta will partner with the Boys and Girls Club’s of Metro Denver and volunteer their time in a new “Girls Only Time” program.
The next members of Sigma Psi will be inducted at the Women’s College in June 2007.
