Leadership Salons: Conversations around the Great Issues of the Day

Have you noticed a lack of women hosts and guests featured on Sunday morning political talk shows, including Meet the Press and Face the Nation? What about those who report major news stories or serve in the United States Congress, Senate, and House of Representatives? Not so many women. DU's Women's College has noticed this lack of women's voices as well, and is hard at work to challenge this unsettling state of affairs.

According to The White House Project Report: Benchmarking Women's Leadership, although women continue to participate in the workforce equally as much as men, only 18% fill top leadership roles. The good news, at least, is that 89% of Americans are actually comfortable with women leading in several different sectors.

University of Denver - Colorado Women's College intends to build on this favorable sentiment toward women as leaders for the betterment of our future. Fortunately for us, the University of Denver has already been selected by the Commission on Presidential Debates to host the first presidential debate of 2012. The entire campus is abuzz, and Colorado Women's College is busy planning its own series of lectures to coincide with this exciting event.

We believe that women require a place at the podium, and Colorado Women's College must elevate experts and leaders--who happen to be women--to lend their expertise to the most important discussions of the day.

Beginning in April, the College will host Leadership Salons: Conversations around the Great Issues of the Day to provide a platform where women thought leaders - whose voices and viewpoints remain significantly underrepresented when it comes to universal topics that truly matter - will lead conversation and commentary to address the great issues of the day, such as health care, the economy, education, and, of course, politics. Who knows - the first woman president could be among us at one of our salons! Men and women are welcome in our audience--but our podium is the realm of women. Join us as we converse, convene, and consider the great issues of the day leading up to the Presidential Debates on October 3, 2012.
