Gender & Women's Studies

Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on current social issues and social justice advocacy from gendered perspectives. The minor and certificate in Gender and Women's Studies include courses in the arts and humanities, social and natural sciences, business, economics, law, and education. Gender and Women's Studies provides context for understanding complex gendered identities across diverse cultures and communities of women and places women at the center of intellectual inquiry. The broadened worldview gained from Gender and Women's Studies makes this an ideal minor to accompany majors in Communication, Information Technology Studies, Law and Society, and as elective course work for the Business major. The certificate in Gender and Women's Studies complements each of these major and minor programs at the College.

Underscoring the idea that education extends beyond the classroom to the larger communities in which we live, the Gender and Women's Studies minor enhances a student's education and furthers her professional development in several significant ways:

  • The study of gendered issues within economic, legal, historical, social, and political contexts expands a student's worldview;
  • The opportunity to explore interdisciplinary theories and methods promotes the development of critical thinking skills, which are valuable in any professional endeavor;
  • The multicultural approaches to course work address issues that directly affect women's participation and advancement in contemporary societies throughout the world.
