Program Certificate

The Philanthropic Studies Certificate program is designed for students who are already employed in the social sector and for those seeking to work in the social sector. Students in the certificate program will learn the origins of philanthropy, effective philanthropic strategies and approaches, how to organize and lead not-for-profit organizations and agencies, and will study and develop knowledge and skills for managing and distributing resources for the public good. This program will prepare students to address new challenges and opportunities in philanthropy.

Objectives for students who pursue this certificate include an opportunity to

  • Examine and analyze origins and history of philanthropy across gender, ethnicity, and race;
  • Promote ethical philanthropic approaches by identifying and addressing contemporary issues and dilemmas;
  • Develop skills to improve and promote philanthropy and leadership in the social sector;
  • Evaluate and dissect latest research and trends; identify and describe a research-based giving program;
  • Demonstrate financial and budgeting strategies and effective application of fund raising theories and tools;


The Philanthropic Studies Certificate requires 18 credit hours of coursework.*

*18 credit hours of coursework for qualified students.
