Writing Certificate

Students who complete the certificate in writing gain expertise for professional purposes. The program is for those who have an undergraduate degree and want to hone their professional writing skills, for prospective students who want to experience college before committing to a degree program, or for current students who want to enhance their credentials with specific writing skills.

Objectives for students who pursue the writing certificate include, but are not limited to:

  • How to write effective memos, letters, reports, requests for proposals (RFP's), RFP responses, and formal reports for business writing.
  • How to use electronic research tools to gather information, and how to synthesize that information into persuasive writing to express ideas convincingly and effectively.
  • How to write essays, newspaper and magazine articles, screenplays, and various forms of non-fiction—such as autobiographies, travel literature and nature writing—for publication, movies and television.
  • How to use a significantly expanded vocabulary in business documents to understand and communicate effectively in business environments.
  • How to use public relations techniques to promote an organization or company, community interests or oneself.

The Writing Certificate requires 20 credit hours* in courses designated as writing intensive.
